Walking

I'm learning to love my morning walk. Exercising isn't the first thing that comes to mind when I try to think of enjoyable activities, but I find that I look forward to it a little more every day.

Just after Christmas, a new friend asked me if I would like to walk with her every morning. We've been walking for about an hour every day that I'm not subbing at the school. Some mornings it has been awfully chilly, but we just tie our scarves a little tighter and walk a little faster. I'm noticing I can walk farther, faster, and I'm less out of breath than I was just a month ago. I'm also becoming addicted to my pedometer and will sometimes stay up a little bit later if my step count hasn't reached 10,000 for the day. Now if the extra weight I keep carrying around would start to melt away, I'd really love it.

Great job, Stephanie! When I started going to the gym, I was right there with you: it wasn't the first thing that came to my mind when I thought of enjoyable activities. That changes though as you establish the routine and start to see the benefits.

A little tip for you... if you want to see the "extra weight ... start to melt away", you'll need to grow your muscle. Muscle consumes fat. Get some dumbells (I'm not talking about your brothers :P) and start doing lunges and curls. Once you start finding them getting easier, move on to something else.

Stephanie,
Working out is often a love/hate thing. You love how it makes you feel, and hate the thought of doing it. But really, it isn't so bad, and once your body starts taking advantage of your activity, your pounds will start melting away.

I also agree, though, that muscle burns fat. Another good idea might be to get some ankle weights and wear them as you walk to help build muscle in your legs. It might also do you good to wear some on your wrists.

Nice thoughts. I'm glad you're learning to love walking.

Staying up just to get your 10000 steps? Now that's dedication! Good job.

Even though I don't do a good job of making time for it, I love exercising, too!

Way to go--I've heard it takes 3 months to establish a true habit--in that you miss it when you don't do it. So keep up the good work. The weights are a great idea. I used to keep a set in the living room and now and then I'd just do some tricep pulls or hammer curls. I need to do that again.

WAY to go and color me green with envy. I have so little stick-to-it-iveness. But I am happy for you!

Still not sure I love the exercise, but I am trying to stick with it. I knew I had to walk today to make 10,000, but between the time I got home from work and got around to my walk, the temperature had dropped 10 degrees - note: always check temp BEFORE you leave. So now I'm wondering if hot chocolate cancels out the effect of a good walk. ;)
