Halloween Countdown

Most years Halloween creeps up on me and I spend the week before the big day trying to get Halloween costumes sewn. This year the kids took it easy on me and I haven't sewn anything yet. The youngest decided to wear a costume that her sister wore four years ago. Good choice.

My son decided he wants to be a pirate - actually, that's a pie-rat. So a gray sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, rat ears and tail, an eye patch, and some mini pie tins attached here and there and we have a pie-rat. What can I say? He comes up with some interesting ideas.

Then there is the oldest. She just wants to be pretty. Since she will probably only ever get one formal gown, she likes to use Halloween as an opportunity to dress up. One of the neighbor girls is lending her a dress, but you can only be a princess so many times. She thought about going as a beauty queen, but then found out another group of girls are doing this. Now she is trying to figure out what she can be and still wear the pretty dress. I've suggested the tooth fairy, Rapunzel, and an Oscar Award winning actress. She likes the Oscar idea, but I'm not creative enough to figure out how to make an Oscar statue in the next few days.

So this is a call for ideas. If anyone has any other ideas of costumes involving a pretty dress, or any ideas of how to make an oscar statue, I'd sure love to hear them. Meanwhile, I'm just counting down the days till Halloween is over and I can start enjoying Christmas.

Bridesmaid? Any kind of fairy--she could make one up.

How is her sense of humor? This probably wouldn't cut it for a young lady, and it might be just as hard to come up with as a little gold statuette, but the thought that came to my mind was to have her carry around a little stuffed Oscar the Grouch doll.

Can't wait for Christmas. Halloween is fun but exhausting.

Hmm...no ideas springing immediately to mind here...

Hmm ... she could be an opera singer. She could be the girl from shoot, what was that movie that came out earlier this year? Of the fair tale princess who comes to New York?

As for the Oscar statue ... I'd probably use a GI Joe doll or something like that and spray paint him gold or make one from paper mache.

Good luck!

what about using an old soccer trophy (perhaps from a second hand store if nobody wants to donate theirs), and doing whatever needs to be done to complete the effect.

Thanks for all the good ideas. I checked out the trophies at the second hand store this morning, but they are all golfing trophies. Didn't seem quite right. I love the idea of the princess from Enchanted and I really like the Oscar the grouch idea. I'll present them all to her after school and let you know what we comne up with.

Okay, we're going with the "Oscars". Instead of a toy Oscar the grouch, we found a coloring page on the internet and printed it off. She'll colour it and then we will wrap it around a small can or something so it will stand upright. She things this is great, because she could never remember the name of the award. This way she can look at her prop and the name is right there. I'll have to ask her if she will let me post pictures.

You are such a good mom. Halloween is my least fav holiday due to costume necessities. Oy! Just thinking about it makes me feel ill. The oscars idea is fabulous.

You are a great mom..! As a parent it seems like Halloween has become more and more elaborate both in the decorations and the kids costumes.
